Changing Times and Laws through Participatory Democracy

On March 1, 2017, Finland became the 22nd country in the world to legally recognize same-sex marriage. [1] Although this hardly sounds shocking anymore, given all that we’ve seen take place in the world around us in recent years, it is nonetheless extremely interesting to note that this heaven-defying legislation came into effect in Finland as a direct result of what is known as a citizens’ initiative. [2] Through this form of participatory democracy, citizens are able to submit proposals to Parliament to enact new laws for virtually anything, provided the minimum requirement of 50,000 signatures is gathered. As long as the government’s guidelines are followed and the initiative meets the set standards, this forces Parliament to consider the initiative in a plenary session.

With gay marriage becoming the law of the land, we can now clearly see the power and the potential danger of the Finnish form of democracy.

Now, in 2018, another high-profile citizens’ initiative has forced the Parliament of Finland to consider legally changing Finnish time from daylight savings to standard time. [3]  Once Finland’s official stance on the matter has been determined, the directive will then be brought before the EU Parliament and the European Council for a final decision. At that stage, any change in the time to be observed within the various member states will be rolled out across the whole EU.

The two citizens’ initiatives highlighted above, from the tiny and humble nation of Finland, ought to rouse our interest in the rapid unfolding of the end-time events foretold in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. These landmark initiatives are centered in the changing of times (the actual time observed in Finland) and laws (the desecration of God’s laws concerning the holy institution of marriage). “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” (Daniel 7:25) The subject of Daniel 7:25 is the papacy, as has been known since the time of the Reformers, but these socio-political developments in Finland show us that truly “all the world wondered after the beast.” (Revelation 13:3)

If it should turn out that a legal change is made in the observance of time as a direct result of a citizens’ initiative, perhaps it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch of the imagination to consider that one day very soon, it may even be possible for a national or international government to enact a law to treat Sunday as an official day of mandatory rest and worship, and to enact a companion law to criminalize the treatment of the Biblical (Saturday) Sabbath as such. The multitude, after all, called for Barabbas to be released and for Christ to be crucified. (See Matthew 27:20-26.)

In Finland, the ISO 8601-week date system [4] is used, wherein Sunday is treated as the seventh day of the week. It therefore seems only natural that the Finnish people could be easily persuaded to accept such legal changes, especially in the face of the ever-increasing number of calamities and environmental problems—namely climate change—being attributed to the violation of the spurious Sunday “sabbath.”

” The fourth commandment has been trampled upon, therefore we are called upon to repair the breach in the law and plead for the desecrated Sabbath. The man of sin, who exalted himself above God, and thought to change times and laws, brought about the change of the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week. In doing this he made a breach in the law of God. Just prior to the great day of God, a message is sent forth to warn the people to come back to their allegiance to the law of God, which anti-christ has broken down. Attention must be called to the breach in the law, by precept and example.

I was shown that the precious promises of Isaiah 58:12-14 apply to those who labor for the restoration of the true Sabbath.

I was shown that the third angel proclaiming the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, represents the people who receive this message, and raise the voice of warning to the world to keep the commandments of God and His law as the apple of the eye; and that in response to this warning, many would embrace the Sabbath of the Lord.”[5]
