Olive oil is known to be one of the richest oils, considerable in its health benefits, especially extra virgin. Olive oil is known to be good in healthy monounsaturated fats, containing large amounts of antioxidants, strong anti-inflammatory properties, helping to prevent stokes, protecting against heart disease, weight management, fighting Alzheimer’s disease, reducing the risk of type two diabetes, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties.
According to the Bible, olive oil is associated with a blessing, a good thing.
"For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey.” Deuteronomy 8:7-8 KJV
For this reason, it comes as no surprise that the enemy would use what God has made good and turn it into something agnostic. Where Christ has a type, be sure that the devil is very near with a counterfeit.
Italy has recently arrested 33 men involved in fake olive oil ring. The Calabrian mafia’s Piromalli clan, is a criminal enterprise whose illicit dealings allegedly include exporting fake extra virgin olive oil to the United States. The country is the top olive oil exporter and the U.S. is the world’s third-largest market, with $2 billion in sales. According to Bloomberg, that includes hundreds of millions of dollars that are spent on products imported from Italy.
“According to investigators, the Piromalli were importing olive pomace oil, a product that’s extracted from already-pressed fruit pulp using chemical solvents, then labeling the low-quality, adulterated oil products as extra virgin olive oil and exporting it to the U.S. Those products were sold through retail chains in New York, Boston and Chicago, the IRPI revealed.”
“Olive oil forgery is now rampant with even some of the most famous brands being found to have been adulterated. The olive oil forgers have apparently gotten so good at doing this that even experts are having a hard time telling the two apart.”
Italy has not been aloof to this issue and has taken full measures to ensure that the oils being produced are of a satisfactory nature. Italy now has a special unit devoted to food fraud, which includes 60 police and 1,100 officers who focus exclusively on inspection and investigation.
