Avocados Have Health Benefits

December 1, 2016

Avocados are considered a fruit because botanically  they fit the criteria of a berry, because of their fleshy pulp, and seed.

Health Benefits

  • Heart Health

  • Weight Management

  • Improves Digestion

  • Reduces Symptoms of Arthritis

  • Helps body to absorb nutrients.

1. Heart Health

  • Avocados are one of the fattiest plant foods. 77% of their calories are from fat. The fat is monounsaturated fat which is good for one’s health.

  • Most of this fat is comprised of oleic acid, a major component in olive oil.

  • This is a heart-healthy acid that helps to reduce inflammation and lower blood cholesterol.

2. Good for Digestion

Despite its creamy texture, an avocado is actually high in fiber.

  • Fiber can help to prevent constipation, maintain a healthy digestive tract and lower the risk of colon cancer.

  • Natural detoxicant: Adequate fiber promotes regular bowel movements, which are crucial for the daily excretion of toxins through the bile and stool. Recent studies have shown that dietary fiber may also play a role in regulating the immune system and inflammation.

3. Satiety and Weight Management

Since avocados are high in fat, many avoid them when trying to lose weight.

However, eating avocados does not prevent weight loss. When eaten, it fills you up, lessening the desire to eat for hours.

Avocados are high in fiber, low in carbohydrates, and do not raise blood sugar levels much, making them a weight loss friendly food.

If you are seeking to gain weight, you can add an avocado alongside other high-calorie foods to increase your caloric intake.

4. Reduce Symptoms of Arthritis

  • Half of an avocado provides 25% of the daily-recommended intake for vitamin K.

  • Eating a diet with adequate vitamin K supports bone health by increasing calcium absorption and reducing urinary excretion of calcium.

How to incorporate avocado into your diet

  • Spread avocado on toast in the morning instead of butter.

  • Use avocado instead of mayonnaise in chicken-less or egg-less salad, or as a spread on a sandwich.

  • The soft, creamy texture of an avocado and its mild taste make it perfect first food for babies. Just mash and serve

  • Individuals with latex allergy may have reactions to food such as an avocado. This may lead to stomach cramps, headaches, or allergic shock.

  • Avocados may cause problems for people with irritable bowel syndrome. It can lead to gas, cramping, bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation.

“...eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” Isaiah 55:2
