A total of 9 states to date has had Country Fresh's Listeria infused fresh cut vegetables delivered and being sold in their local supermarkets. The product are being sold in either a clear plastic container or in Styrofoam trays overwrapped with clear plastic. Listeria is a type of bacterium that infects humans and other warm blooded animals through contaminated food. The reported states affected are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Nearly 30,000 cases of various precut vegetables have been recalled after being tested positive in a Georgia grocery store - the vegetables tested included sliced onions, mushrooms, and peppers.
Thankfully, to date, it has been reported that there are no cases in connection with Listeria having affected anyone, however this is false excitement. Listeria by nature has an incubation period of up to 70 days! The recall date on the precut vegetables are those with the best-by-dates between Aug 7 and Aug 19th. What this means is, anyone that has consumed these vegetables during or before this time period will not show any signs well into the month of December 2016!
So, how does listeria get into vegetables? "Listeria is found naturally in soil and water, and animals can carry the bacteria without appearing sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Raw vegetables can become contaminated with Listeria either through contact with soil or with animal manure that is used as fertilizer, according to the Mayo Clinic" (Rettner 2016)
