History of All Saints Day

Celebrated annually on November 1, All Saints Day is a “Holy Day” established by the Roman Catholic Church to commemorate all Christian saints (declared so by the Roman Catholic Church), specifically those who do not have a special feast day dedicated to them.  These “saints” have died and are supposedly now in heaven.  All Saints Day is not to be confused with “All Souls Day,” another Roman Catholic “holy day,” commemorated on November 2, dedicated to those who have died, but have not yet reached heaven according to Roman Catholic teaching.  However, Roman Catholics are not the only people who celebrate All Saints Day, some Anglicans and even Protestants honor this day; and individuals who  may not have  any religious affiliation have come to recognize it as the day of the dead (Dia de Los Muertos) in which loved ones who have died are recognized and honored. On this day, the gravesites of departed friends and family members are visited; altars are built for them containing the deceased persons’ favorite foods and beverages along with photographs and other commemorative items.  The celebration of these holidays commence on October 31 known as “All Hallows Eve” or Halloween, a day in which children invite the spirits of dead children to come back by making an altar for them, then November 1, All Saints Day, followed by All Souls Day.

Paganism and Spiritualism

There is nothing holy or sacred about these holidays, but they are abominable and are in verity days dedicated to witchcraft, sorcery, spirit mediums, and devil-worship, albeit wrapped in various guises, and are in no way harmless. The recognition and celebration of these holidays are nothing more than spiritualism that invites demonic possession with our without the permission of the participant.  Careful research shows that the choice of the date for which All Saints Day is commemorated is the very date of the Pagan "Feast of the Lamures," a day which pagans use to appease the so-called restless spirits of the dead by giving them food, treats and other things they enjoyed while they were alive.  This is a clear indication that, much like all the other Catholic “holy” days or Holidays, All Saints Day is nothing more than baptized paganism and is deeply entrenched in pagan ritualism and symbolism.

State of the Dead

For this reason, it is inconceivable that Christians can so unconscionably celebrate any of these holidays.  Equally unbelievable is their willingness to participate in something that is so anti-scriptural.  The Bible leaves no ambiguity as to the state of the dead and is absolutely clear that when a person dies, his/her spirit does not live on; he/she does not go to heaven but returns to dust and is in the grave awaiting either the first or the second resurrection.  Please carefully read the following confirming scriptures:  Job 12:14, and 21; Psalm 115:17; Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 and 10; Ecclesiastes 12:7; Ezekiel 18:20; John 5:28 and 29; and Acts 2:29 and 34.  Just as clear as the Bible is concerning the state of the dead, is the clarity given concerning his people not mingling in spiritualism in any form that it may present itself in.  Please read the following verses and heed the warnings therein: Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 19:31; Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 19:9-12; 1 Samuel 15:23; Isaiah 8:19; Revelation 21:8 and Revelation 22:15.  There are many other scriptures that could be used, but it is not a multiplicity of scriptures that the reader needs but rather a willingness to obey even one. Opening of the Sixth Seal

God in His providence allowed a prophetic event to take place November 1, the day that people’s attention was absorbed in All Saints Day, of the year 1755 to not only draw men’s attention to end-time bible prophecy but to also show them the fallacy of celebrating All Saints day or any other Day “hallowed” by man and not God. This universal event was so remarkable and widely felt that individuals could not ignore it and sought an explanation for its occurrence.  Many would discover that the explanation is found in Revelation 6:12— the first sign of the sixth seal that precedes the Second Advent of Christ. There are only seven seals in scripture; and under the seventh seal, the Second Coming of Jesus takes place.

Not only does the Bible foretell the manner and object of Christ’s return, but it also presents tokens so that men can know when it is near.  The events under the sixth seal are described thus: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;  And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.  And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Revelation 6:12-17.

Extent of Lisbon Earthquake

The first three events of the sixth seal have already been fulfilled in their order; and the only scenes yet to transpire are those involving the Second Coming of Christ.  As mentioned before, the great earthquake occurred Nov. 1, 1755, with the epicenter in Lisbon Portugal, a day wherein inhabitants were celebrating All Saints Day. In the Encyclopedia Britannica, it was recorded: “Lisbon earthquake of 1755, series of earthquakes that occurred on the morning of Nov. 1, 1755, causing serious damage to the port city of Lisbon, Port., and killing an estimated 60,000 people in Lisbon alone. Violent shaking demolished large public buildings and about 12,000 dwellings. Because November 1 is All Saints’ Day, a large part of the population was attending mass at the moment the earthquake struck; the churches, unable to withstand the seismic shock, collapsed, killing or injuring thousands of worshippers…The earthquake generated a tsunami that produced waves about 20 feet (6 metres) high at Lisbon and 65 feet (20 metres) high at Cádiz, Spain. The waves traveled westward to Martinique in the Caribbean Sea, a distance of 3,790 miles (6,100 km), in 10 hours and there reached a height of 13 feet (4 metres) above mean sea level. Damage was even reported in Algiers, 685 miles (1,100 km) to the east. The total number of persons killed included those who perished by drowning and in fires that burned throughout Lisbon for about six days following the shock.”[1]

We are certain that this earthquake, the most terrible earthquake ever recorded, fulfills the prophecy of Revelation 6:12 because of its unparalleled magnitude and the other foretold events that followed. “The revelator thus describes the first of the signs to precede the Second Advent: ‘There was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood…’ These signs were witnessed before the opening of the nineteenth century. In fulfillment of this prophecy there occurred, in the year 1755, the most terrible earthquake that has ever been recorded. Though commonly known as the earthquake of Lisbon, it extended to the greater part of Europe, Africa, and America. It was felt in Greenland, in the West Indies, in the island of Madeira, in Norway and Sweden, Great Britain and Ireland. It pervaded an extent of not less than four million square miles. In Africa the shock was almost as severe as in Europe. A great part of Algiers was destroyed; and a short distance from Morocco, a village containing eight or ten thousand inhabitants was swallowed up. A vast wave swept over the coast of Spain and Africa engulfing cities and causing great destruction.”[2]

The Sun Blackened and Moon Turned to Blood

“Twenty-five years later appeared the next sign mentioned in the prophecy--the darkening of the sun and moon. What rendered this more striking was the fact that the time of its fulfillment had been definitely pointed out. In the Saviour's conversation with His disciples upon Olivet, after describing the long period of trial for the church,--the 1260 years of papal persecution, concerning which He had promised that the tribulation should be shortened,--He thus mentioned certain events to precede His coming, and fixed the time when the first of these should be witnessed: ‘In those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light.’ Mark 13:24. The 1260 days, or years, terminated in 1798. A quarter of a century earlier, persecution had almost wholly ceased. Following this persecution, according to the words of Christ, the sun was to be darkened. On the 19th of May, 1780, this prophecy was fulfilled.”[3]

Stars Fell From Heaven

“In 1833, two years after Miller began to present in public the evidences of Christ's soon coming, the last of the signs appeared which were promised by the Saviour as tokens of His second advent. Said Jesus: ‘The stars shall fall from heaven.’ Matthew 24:29. And John in the Revelation declared, as he beheld in vision the scenes that should herald the day of God: ‘The stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.’ Revelation 6:13. This prophecy received a striking and impressive fulfillment in the great meteoric shower of November 13, 1833. That was the most extensive and wonderful display of falling stars which has ever been recorded; ‘the whole firmament, over all the United States, being then, for hours, in fiery commotion! No celestial phenomenon has ever occurred in this country, since its first settlement, which was viewed with such intense admiration by one class in the community, or with so much dread and alarm by another.’ ‘Its sublimity and awful beauty still linger in many minds. . . . Never did rain fall much thicker than the meteors fell toward the earth; east, west, north, and south, it was the same. In a word, the whole heavens seemed in motion. . . . The display, as described in Professor Silliman's Journal, was seen all over North America. . . . From two o'clock until broad daylight, the sky being perfectly serene and cloudless, an incessant play of dazzlingly brilliant luminosities was kept up in the whole heavens.’”[4]

Why the Delay?

Immediately after the falling of the stars in 1833, God’s wrath was to come and the Second Coming of Jesus was to take place (Revelation 6:14-17); but we are 183 years removed from that time.  What has taken place; why the delay? If the Bible was so accurate concerning the specificities of each event that transpired under the sixth seal, how is it that the followings scenes did not occur in rapid succession?  At the close of the sixth seal, an important question is asked, whose answer explains the protraction of events. “For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Revelation 6:17.  The succeeding chapter  provides the answer as to why Christ did not come immediately following the stars falling from heaven, and that is because His people were not yet sealed and therefore unable to stand in the day of God’s wrath. “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads” Revelation 7:1-3.  These verses lead to another important question, what is the seal of God? In order to answer this question, we must allow the Bible to be its own expositor by comparing scripture with scripture, as is the only way to arrive at truth (Isaiah 28:9 and 10; Matthew 18:16 and  1 Corinthians 2:13).

The Seal of God

To understand what the seal of God is, it is essential to recognize the components of a literal seal.  A literal seal has three components: name, title, and territory (see Esther 3:12; Esther 8:8 and 1 Kings 21:8).  God’s seal, with the three components, is found in His law, the Ten Commandments, according to Isaiah 8:16, “Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.” Specifically, the seal of God is found in the fourth commandment and is the seventh-day Sabbath as it is the only commandment that mentions the components of the seal.  “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:  But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” Exodus 20:8-11.

Those who are keeping all of the commandments of God, including the Seventh-day Sabbath, which in the time-period of 1833 no denominations were abiding by and teaching the obligation of honoring it, will be sealed by God and thus able to stand in the day of God’s wrath. Shortly after 1833, the falling of the stars, the final sign before Jesus’ Second Coming was to take place, the group that began proclaiming the glorious truth of the seventh-day Sabbath was Seventh-Day Adventists.  This by no means indicates that every person claiming to be Seventh-day Adventist or claiming to keep the Sabbath will be sealed and saved at last.  Those only who keep all of God’s Commandments and have gotten victory over sin by God’s grace will receive his seal and inherit God’s kingdom.  “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” 2 Timothy 2:19. The significance of people being sealed in their foreheads is that they have made a conscious decision to follow God’s Word in every particular.

Day of God’s Wrath

Again, at the closing of the final event transpiring under the sixth seal, it is mentioned that the great day of God’s is come, in connection with the question “who shall be able to stand?”  What is the great day of God’s wrath; and what brings it?  The Bible clearly answers in Revelation 15:1 and Revelation 16:1 and 2: “And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.” “And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.” God’s wrath represents the outpouring of the seven last plagues which come as a result of men receiving the Mark of the Beast.  The great and final test that earth’s inhabitants will encounter is over the Mark of the beast versus the seal of God-- the commandments of men versus the commandments of God.  Since God’s seal is the Seventh-day Sabbath, the Mark of the beast is a counterfeit, which would be enforced Sunday worship, not a microchip or a tattoo.

The Mark of the Beast

In contrast to those who receive God’s seal and are able to stand in the day of God’s wrath, the falling of the seven last plagues, are those individuals who receive the Mark of the Beast in their foreheads or in their hands (see Revelation 13:16-18; Revelation 14:9-11). Just as the seal of God is connected with worship, so is the Mark of the beast, as seen in Revelation 13:15 and 16. “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads.”  A careful study of Revelation 13:1-10 reveals the identity of the Beast, which is the Roman Catholic Church, which fulfills to the very letter every specification of the prophecy.  The Mark of the Beast, or mark of the authority of the beast, Roman Catholicism, is Sunday observance, of which the church boasts that it has been granted the authority from God to transfer the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday. “As the sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papist writers cite ‘the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; . . . because by keeping Sunday, they acknowledge the church's power to ordain feasts, and to command them under sin…’ What then is the change of the Sabbath, but the sign, or mark, of the authority of the Roman Church—‘the mark of the beast’?”[5] This fulfills another prophecy referring to the Roman Catholic Church in Daniel 7:25. “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.”

Who Shall be Able to Stand?

And so, “while the worshipers of God will be especially distinguished by their regard for the fourth commandment,--since this is the sign of His creative power and the witness to His claim upon man's reverence and homage,--the worshipers of the beast will be distinguished by their efforts to tear down the Creator's memorial, to exalt the institution of Rome. It was in behalf of the Sunday that popery first asserted its arrogant claims…and its first resort to the power of the state was to compel the observance of Sunday as ‘the Lord's day.’”[6]  Please continue studying more concerning the Mark of the Beast by reading the chapter entitled “God’s Law Immutable” in The Great Controversy.

If individuals have accepted the Roman Catholic Church’s assumed authority to declare certain days as holy or “holidays,” such as “All Saints Day,” it will not be a hard thing for them to accept Sunday as a weekly holiday all the while dishonoring God’s Sabbath, especially when it is enforced by government and incurs penalties. Such persons will receive the Mark of the Beast, receive the wrath of God and thus be unable to stand at Christ’s Coming.  While on the other hand, those who would be sealed and able to stand, who would not receive the mark of the beast and his image when the decree goes forth, must have decision now to say, “Nay, we will not regard the institution of the beast, but will follow the commandments of God, be the price what it may.”
