What you Need to Know About Zika

March 7, 2016

And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. Luke 21:11

The Zika virus is a disease that was first discovered in 1947 and named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. The virus is spread primarily by an infected Aedes species mosquito. The virus is typically  mild and symptoms usually last from a few days to a week, after being bitten by an infected mosquito.  Common symptoms of the virus are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. Some may also experience headaches and muscle pain. The virus remains in the affected person for about a week but can be longer in some. Please see your health care provider if you are experiencing any of these symptoms or suspect that you have been bitten by or exposed to mosquitoes.

No vaccine exists for the virus, so all are cautioned to avoid mosquito bites, especially in the day, by wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect the body and its extremities. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and their eggs, therefore, try to avoid and discard of all standing water. Read more about Transmission and Risks here.
