Skin- The Absorber

April 10, 2016

The skin is the largest excretory organ of the body. If the skin excretes, then it must also absorb through its pores. It is safe to say then that what we use on our skin, ultimately ends up in our bodies, bloodstream and lymphatic system. Our bodies absorb 60% of products used topically. For this reason, it is important to pay close attention to the ingredients in the products that we put on our skin.

Most mainstream lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes and cosmetics contain a blend of toxic chemicals, colors, fragrances, carcinogenic chemicals, allergens, and irritants. It is wise to become educated about these ingredients to avoid selecting items that will harm your body. A lot of these products also contain animal products.

" In 2005, the Environmental Working Group published a combination of two studies that found toxic chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies born in the U.S. in the fall of 2004. They screened for more than 400 chemicals, and an astounding 287 toxins were detected within the umbilical cord blood of these newborns. Of these 287 chemicals, 217 were neurotoxins, and 208 are known to damage growth development or cause birth defects. These toxins included mercury, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated and polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and furans (PBCD/F and PBDD/F), perflorinated chemicals (PFCs), organochlorine pesticides like DDT and chlordane, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated napthalenes (PCNs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and many others. These study results have been largely ignored by the media." (Burnes, n.d.)

Many have made dietary changes by returning to a plant based diet, however still suffering with certain ailments directly linked to a flesh based diet. The products you use daily may be the culprits.
