Health Benefits of Activated Charcoal

Always study and teach the use of the simplest remedies, and the special blessing of the Lord may be expected to follow the use of these means which are within the reach of the common people.--Letter 100, 1903.  {2SM 298.6}.

The Lord has provided antidotes for disease in simple plants, and these can be used by faith,… .{16MR 248.3}

As long ago as 1550BC, activated charcoal has been documented for use in treating medical conditions.

Although not an herb, yet charcoal is invaluable in a number of ways.  It is pure carbon and will absorb  (not absorb, but bind with)  29 of the 30 most dangerous poisons, thus neutralizing them.

Charcoal is used for infection, inflammation, and swelling.  It is best known to stop intestinal gas (about a spoonful in half a glass of water, followed by another glass of water).

In any type of acute poisoning, the best thing to do is induce vomiting, following with a large dose of activated charcoal, diluted in water, to render most substances harmless.  Usually 30-60 grams (about 1 tbs to 1/2 cup) is needed, suspended in water and taken as soon as possible after the injection of any toxin or poison.

Activated charcoal can be used to treat skin ailments, bad breath, whitening the teeth , food poisoning, constipation and body odor. It can be used as a poultice to treat insect stings, mushroom poisoning, poison ivy, cholera, dysentery, bites and other inflammation. It can also be used to treat snake bites in an emergency. Babies born with jaundice have been known to be treated with activated charcoal as well.

Forms of Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is available in many different forms such as powder in a capsule, liquid form, suspension, chewable tablets and powder form. It is often used as an ingredient in body detox products and colon cleansers. Some people report that using activated charcoal when they have the flu or other viruses helps them to recover quicker. The reason for this is that it is able to prevent viruses and bacteria from remaining active in the body while absorbing a great deal of their toxins before they have a chance to spread or multiply.

When using activated charcoal, it is best to take it between meals and a few hours after using any vitamin or mineral supplements, as it may interfere with the absorption of these into the body. It must also be stored in a properly sealed container away from heat and moisture. It should preferably be used with water only, or taken alone, as anything else such as fruit juice or ice cream will cause it to lose a great deal of its effectiveness.

Advice to the Request of a Physician

“On one occasion a physician came to me in great distress. He had been called to attend a young woman who was dangerously ill. She had contracted fever … she became so much worse that it was feared she could not live. The physician, Dr. Merritt Kellogg, came to me and said, "Sister White, have you any light for me on this case? If relief cannot be given our sister, she can live but a few hours." I replied, "Send to a blacksmith's shop, and get some pulverized charcoal; make a poultice of it, and lay it over her stomach and sides." The doctor hastened away to follow out my instructions. Soon he returned, saying, "Relief came in less than half an hour after the application of the poultices. She is now having the first natural sleep she has had for days."  {2SM 295.2}. “I have ordered the same treatment for others who were suffering great pain, and it has brought relief and been the means of saving life. My mother had told me that snake bites and the sting of reptiles and poisonous insects could often be rendered harmless by the use of charcoal poultices.” {2SM 295.3}

"And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee." Exodus 15:26
